The Vision

The Salt Cellar grew from an initiative among local Methodist people of Oldham which sprang from the vision first shared by Rev Wesley Cooke (one of our former Superintendent Ministers) and Derek Simmons in the late 1980's.

This vision was for the provision of a central café for daytime shoppers visitors and town-centre workers, a base for youth work to be shared and developed at evenings/weekends, and also for a place from which special ministry could be offered to those in need in the town centre at night.

Much of this vision began to take shape with the purchase of 10 Church Lane and the opening of the Salt Cellar in October 1990. While the early years established this as an important project, the recent developments and move across to 11a (into the former County Court building) are a striking example of what can be done.

With the hard work and dedication of so many people, volunteers and staff, Methodists and friends from various Christian backgrounds, and by the grace of God, this work is set to continue well into the 21st century as a new way of being Church. We look forward to all that God will lead us on to accomplish for the sake of his Son, Jesus.
